Scuola Vita Nuova

Scuola Vita Nuova
Kansas City, MO

The Scuola Vita Nuova project involves the relocation of the students and faculty of an existing charter school to a new location. The facility itself is a renovation of an existing two story school built in 1948. Some of the challenges associated with the project involve fitting the wants and needs of the teachers and students into a space that was not designed to meet the standards and technologies of modern education. The classroom layout of the second story utilizes the natural daylight along the north and south sides of the building whereas on the first floor where daylight is limited due to the building being partially below grade, large spaces and corridors that span the length of the building were designed to create an open feeling. In front of the building where the site was entirely covered by asphalt paving, the new design removes the paving to allow for greenspace that lessens the environmental impact of the facility. A new two story glass entrance vestibule was incorporated into the design to create a new dedicated entrance that was lacking in the original building and to create more of a presence along the main road adjacent to the facility.
