Blue Springs High School

Blue Springs High School
Blue Springs, MO

Beginning with a unique character statement, Blue Springs High School is a project that demanded distinctive design solutions for a challenging site with a challenging program. The client expressed a desire to focus on identity and security. The existing high school was a sprawling campus of six unique buildings planted on a pitched site. Because of the school’s age and historic growth by accretion, the campus was disjointed visually and extremely difficult to secure. The addition connects four separate buildings unifying and securing an existing campus around a renovated circulation courtyard. The new courtyard boasts new more ergonomic circulation paths, an informal amphitheatre and an outdoor classroom. The campus entry was consolidated into two paths – student entry and visitor entry – both of which led directly to the revitalized courtyard. To address identity for extracurricular activities, the athletic department was modernized and expanded to include a new press box, locker rooms and athletic plaza. Finally, an aggressive array of signage, murals and decorative lighting was employed to blend the incoherent campus together. The result is a modern, safe and lively new Blue Springs High School.
